Man missing after snowmobiles break through ice, 2 others rescued

A man is missing after a group of snowmobiles went through the ice in Black River Lake in Kings County, according to the RCMP.

A 26-year-old New Ross man was not found when rescuers helped two other snowmobilers.

The three people were travelling on separate snowmobiles on Black River Lake Saturday night when their machines went through the ice.

RCMP say they were part of a larger group of 10 to 12 snowmobiles.

"Several people from the area, perhaps in residences and stuff nearby also came out and assisted in the search," said Const. Tammy Lobb.

The two people who were rescued were taken to hospital, it's not clear what their condition is.

Police were called to the area at 9:55 p.m.

Search and rescue, several fire department and a Joint Rescue Coordination Centre helicopter were all used to help the snowmobilers, the RCMP say.

"I'm told that this incident occurred in an area of the river that narrows and there is a current in that location and that most snowmobilers would go around this particular area, but it appears this group did not last night," said Lobb.

The search for the missing New Ross man is continuing today.

Lobb says volunteers from the New Minas volunteer fire service are involved and they're considering using the search and rescue helicopter again.
