Margot Robbie Had a 10-Hour Barbie Dress Fitting for Promo Tour, Says Stylist Andrew Mukamal (Exclusive)
"Margot and I marathoned through 50 or 60 outfits," Mukamal told PEOPLE at an event celebrating the release of their collaborative book 'Barbie: The World Tour'
Putting together Margot Robbie's Barbie press tour wardrobe was no easy feat.
In fact, she and her stylist Andrew Mukamal had one marathon day last summer where they spent 10 hours trying on dozens of dresses before they set out on their world tour.
"I had a board where every city was mapped out," Mukamal tells PEOPLE exclusively at a Los Angeles event celebrating the release of their collaborative book Barbie: The World Tour. "We knew exactly which looks, which Barbies and which references were archival, and everything was very specific for each destination. That day, I had a huge studio in New York filled with everything Barbie and pink and fluffy and glittery that you could ever imagine. Margot and I marathoned through 50 or 60 outfits, and every 30 minutes, one of the brands would come and [help] tailor the outfit that I had been working on for months already."
Those outfits that Mukamal carefully curated for Robbie — who plays the titular character in last year's Greta Gerwig-directed film — became some of the most talked-about looks of the entire year. While promoting the film in every corner of the world, Robbie wore looks from fashion houses like Schiaparelli, Versace, Balmain and more.
And Mukamal had to be extra careful that nothing got lost along the way.
"Everything is locked with tracking devices," he says of how he packed all of Robbie's outfits while traveling. "And [Apple] Air Tags. A lot of Air Tags."
Mukamal says her looks were packed in several suitcases — two to four per trip because he wanted to have options for just-in-case scenarios — but he became a pro at packing and unpacking by the end of the tour.
"You’d be surprised at how much I could fit in one of my suitcases," he adds.
Barbie: The World Tour, which officially releases March 19 through Rizzoli, takes Barbie fans through Robbie's stylized outfits in a more intimate way. The book also includes several outfits that never made it to the press tour because of the SAG-AFTRA strike.

"We had the idea before we even realized that we were going to have any missed looks or cities that we didn't make it to," Mukamal tells PEOPLE of those extra outfits and how the book came to be. "It just felt like such a unique and exciting project with such enthusiasm from everybody involved. As Margot and I were working on the ideas and talking about what the tour was going to look like, it really just took us into this world of dreaming and collaboration. This just felt like a subject matter that would be so incredible to be memorialized that way."
Mukamal also praised Robbie for not just being such an easy actress to work with on the book and as a client but for her work ethic in general. The stylist tells PEOPLE that she's "dedicated and so excited about every project that she works on" but with Barbie specifically, it was "near and dear to her heart."
"Every moment with her was truly a dream."
