Mary-Kate Olsen And Olivier Sarkozy’s Relationship and Divorce: A Complete Timeline

Mary-Kate Olsen has officially filed for divorce from Olivier Sarkozy, a banker who is the half-brother of the former French president Nicolas Sarkozy.

According to sources, the 33-year-old fashion mogul and 50-year-old banker ultimately couldn’t agree on what they wanted their future to look like. Sources have said she wanted to have children, while he was content with his three adult children from a previous marriage. Reports also suggest that he wanted her to be more of a “stay-at-home wife” and didn’t understand her dedication to her business ventures.

Olsen and Sarkozy have been married for five years but together for eight after meeting in 2012. The couple has been notoriously private, but here’s everything we do know about their relationship, from when they met to their split.

April–November 2012: Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy meet at a party in April 2012, and things move pretty quickly from there. They were eventually photographed cuddling at Madison Square Garden during a game between the New York Knicks and the Dallas Mavericks in November, which confirmed the relationship publicly.

February 2014: Sarkozy allegedly pops the question with a vintage Cartier ring valued at $81,250. Mary-Kate accepts and the wedding planning begins.

November 2015: The couple ties the knot in a private Manhattan ceremony, with just 50 people in attendance. “Party decor consisted of bowls and bowls filled with cigarettes, and everyone smoked the whole night,” a source told Page Six at the time. Not much else is known, as guests were required to hand over their phones upon entering.

April 17, 2020: Reports emerge in May that Olsen attempted to file for an emergency divorce after Sarkozy allegedly terminated their NYC apartment lease amid the coronavirus pandemic.

May 15: People reports that the state of New York rejected her plea, deeming it “not essential” amid the coronavirus pandemic when courts were closed.

“We are only accepting essential/emergency matters for filing. The original filing was rejected by the New York County Clerk because they did not follow the essential-matter procedure,” New York courts spokesman Lucian Chalfen told the publication. “They refiled under the essential-matter procedure and the matter was referred to the ex parte judge, a New York State Supreme Judge. He decided that it is not essential so they can’t file anything at this point.”

May 20: Sources claim the reason the couple decided to split was because Olsen had changed her mind about starting a family.

“A few years ago, having a baby was not a priority for her. This has changed,” one source told People, while another said, “Mary-Kate thought he would budge on that and he hasn’t.”

May 21: Other sources claimed the family detail was just one part of their disagreements. Allegedly, Sarkozy wanted Olsen to be more of a “stay-at-home wife.”

May 25: Olsen officially files for divorce after New York courts reopen, according to Page Six.
