- These were the top-three stories on Yahoo Canada this week. One of them was about balloons, and one of them was about the McDonald's menu. What is going on? Let's dive into it.
The top story of the week was unsurprisingly about mysterious balloons and objects flying over Canada and the United States. Four mysterious flying objects were spotted flying over North America this month. The US military shot down an elite Chinese spy balloon last week. They later also discovered and then neutralized an unidentified object in the sky over Alaska.
Then the Canadian Air Force, working alongside the US, brought down a different object that was flying in Canadian airspace over Yukon. And then another one that was flying over Lake Huron, which straddles Ontario and Michigan. Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, said that they may be linked to each other, and it's not a coincidence that they've been spotted over such a short time.
The US National Security Council confirmed that the first object discovered was a Chinese spy balloon, and its path showed that it was interested in monitoring sensitive US military sites. But in regards to the other three objects, US President, Biden, said that nothing right now suggests that they were related to the Chinese spy balloon program, and they might just be tied to private companies. He also promised to speak to China's President, Xi Jinping, about the issue and iterated that he does not want to start a cold war.
China, on the other hand, said that it may take measures against US entities related to the downing of the first balloon. They claimed that it was an unmanned weather airship that just wandered off course and have accused the US of overreacting.
A highly contagious stomach bug known for its unpleasant days-long symptoms called norovirus is on the rise in Canada. After a lull caused by the pandemic, federal health officials have confirmed that cases of norovirus have been increasing at both the national level and within several provinces. The stomach bug infects approximately 685 million people each year worldwide.
The most common symptoms of the norovirus include nausea, diarrhea, and stomach pain. Less common symptoms include headaches, fever, chills, and muscle aches. It's extremely contagious. And the most common ways of getting the virus are by having direct contact with the sick person, touching contaminated surfaces, and then putting your hands through your mouth or consuming contaminated water or food, a nurse told Yahoo Canada last year.
Kathy Horst, a public health specialist from Ontario, says that the best way to prevent the spread of the norovirus is by washing your hands and isolating if you're sick.
Will McDonald's Canada be getting an Indian makeover? A petition to get some menu items popular at the McDonald's in India on the McDonald's menu in Brampton, Ontario, is quickly being circulated online and is gaining some traction. The appeal aims to bring more vegetarian options to the menu in Brampton, where 33% of the population is East Indian.
Indians from Brampton would like to see the McAloo Tikki, the Mcspicy paneer burger, the peri peri fries, and so on their McDonald's menus. McDonald's responded and said that they love it when guests tell them what they like and will continue to listen to them to understand their needs.
Some Canadians are very excited by the idea and the others, not so much. In fact, 49% of Yahoo readers don't want McDonald's to change their menu.
