Memramcook residents concerned about proposed campsite

Some Memramcook residents are worried that plans to build a campground in the middle of a residential area will turn their quiet piece of land into a nightmare.

Last week, residents received a letter from the Village of Memramcook about its intention to rezone 10.5 hectares of land on LaVallée Road for commercial use.

The developer, Sylvio Beaupré, wants to build a campground with 130 sites for many different types of camping, including RVs.

"It would change all the neighbourhood," said Gerard Cyr.

"All the neighbours are against that."

Gerard and Diane Cyr have been living right next to the proposed site for more than 20 years.

They say they have a hard time understanding why someone would choose to build a campground there and worry that the appeal might be the all-terrain vehicle trail that's right in their backyard.

"What else is there here but that four-wheeler trail," said Diane Cyr.

"There's nothing here for a campsite, except being in the woods and being on that trail."

They worry the neighbourhood will become noisier, with campers arriving late at night or leaving very early in the morning and campfires are also a concern in this wooded area.

The Cyrs said they got together with the rest of the neighbours and are trying to figure out how to fight the plan.

"There's still a lot of information missing," said Diane Cyr.

"We need to know more as to what's going to happen."

Meanwhile the Village of Memramcook says that people who oppose the project have to submit any objections by August 16, when a public meeting will take place.

Cyr says the neighbours are getting a petition ready and plan to attend the public session.
