MGM reportedly asked Netflix and Apple for $600 million to bring James Bond film 'No Time To Die' straight to streaming

"No Time To Die," the next James Bond film, could have easily bypassed cinemas and gone straight to streaming platforms following discussions between its film studio, Netflix, and Apple, according to various reports.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) was looking for around $600 million in deals with Netflix and Apple during discussions in late September, sources close to the matter told Variety. The discussions were also reported by Bloomberg.

Sources told Deadline that both Netflix and Apple were only willing to pay half this price for the film, which cost around $250 million to produce.

MGM and EON Productions, which produces the franchise, also considered releasing the film through a paid video-on-demand option, Deadline reported. This would have been similar to Disney's release of Mulan, which added an additional cost to the usual Disney+ subscription fees.

MGM has recommitted to bringing the film to movie theaters after the franchise's principal producer Barbara Broccoli eventually snubbed the streaming idea, Deadline reported.

Theatrical release could bring in around $1.2 billion at the box office, Forbes estimated, just topping 2012's Skyfall, which made $1.1 billion.

MGM declined to comment on any talks to the publications, but told Bloomberg the film "is not for sale."

"The film's release has been postponed until April 2021 in order to preserve the theatrical experience for moviegoers," an MGM spokesperson told the publication.

The film was originally scheduled to release in April 2020, but has been pushed back twice during the pandemic as cinemas continue to limit the number of visitors due to social distancing restrictions.

"No Time To Die" marks the 25th installment in the James Bond franchise, and Daniel Craig's final performance as the spy.

MGM, EON Productions, Netflix, and Apple didn't immediately reply to Business Insider's request for comment.
