Michael Caine Says New Movie Might Be His Last Since He Is 'Sort of Retired Already': 'I Am Bloody 90'
“They gave me a very good walking stick, and I was able to do scenes that needed that. I’d just do them once, and then fall over,” he said about filming
Michael Caine is getting candid about whether he’ll return to the screen again.
The iconic English actor, 90, admitted in a recent interview with The Telegraph that his upcoming movie The Great Escaper will probably be his final film — despite having said he would retire in the past and still returning to make more movies.
“But I wasn’t 90 then. I am bloody 90 now, and I can’t walk properly and all that,” Caine told the outlet. “I sort of am retired now.”
Caine said after the COVID-19 pandemic, he was drawn back to the silver screen by the story of The Great Escaper’s main character Bernard Jordan, a World War II veteran who escapes from his care home to attend the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings in France.

“I was so happy to do it,” Caine said. “I just loved the character of Bernie. I thought he was incredible, and it’s so beautifully written. With Covid and all that, I hadn’t done a picture for three years, and I thought I was finished. And I suddenly did it – and had such a wonderful time.”
However, the role did come with its own challenges, especially as Caine can no longer walk without an aid.
“They gave me a very good walking stick, and I was able to do scenes that needed that. I’d just do them once, and then fall over,” he said with a smile.‘“But just one take, and that’s it. Forget it.”

Caine made an appearance on the red carpet at the premiere of The Great Escaper at BFI Southbank in London on Wednesday, taking photos with a walking stick and in a wheelchair alongside his castmates.
The actor previously alluded that he would retire in 2021 after the release of his movie Best Sellers on the BBC Radio show Kermode and Mayo's Film Review, saying that the film “has turned out to be what is my last part.”
"Because I haven't worked for two years, and I have a spine problem, which affects my legs. So, I can't walk very well,” Caine said at the time, adding that “there aren't exactly scripts pouring out with a leading man who's 88."
"And I also wrote a book, a couple of books, which were published and were successful. So, I'm now not an actor, I'm a writer, which is lovely because as an actor, you have to get up at half past 6 in the morning and go to the studio. As a writer, you can start writing without leaving the bed," he added.
He’s written six books since 1984, with his most recent being Blowing the Bloody Doors Off: And Other Lessons in Life, published through Hachette Book Group in 2018.
The Great Escaper is in U.K. theaters Oct. 6.
