Michelle Pfeiffer Describes Awkward Blind Date Where She Met Husband David E. Kelley: 'I Did a Bad Thing'
"We didn’t speak the whole night and then he left early to go to another party and I thought, ‘Okay that went well,' " the actress recalled
Michelle Pfeiffer and David E. Kelley have been married for 30 years, but their start wasn't exactly a fairy tale!
The actress and Henry Rose founder, 65, opened up about first meeting her husband on an awkward blind date during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show.
"Is it true that when you met your husband, you were being set up on a blind date and you actually thought that maybe he and your sister would make a good match?" asked Drew Barrymore.
"I did — well, only because he wasn’t speaking to me [on the date]. And somehow, I did a bad thing," said Pfeiffer.
According to the Batman Returns star, the date was supposed to be a one-on-one outing, "but I decided it should be a group date. I still don't know why it was a bad idea."

Pfeiffer said she "was anxious," and that the date "didn't go well." As she explained, "We were in this restaurant and there were eight of us, and somehow [David] ended up sitting across from my sister and I ended up sitting across from his best friend."
"We didn’t speak the whole night, and then he left early to go to another party and I thought, ‘Okay that went well,' " Pfeiffer recalled.
But it all worked out in the end. "He actually finally called me two days later — that was also not okay. He called and we ended up talking on the phone for an hour, and it just went [from] that," she said.
Pfeiffer and Kelley, 67, celebrated "30 years of bliss" in November. The actress marked their marriage milestone by posting a rare photo with her husband on Instagram.

At the time of their meeting, Pfeiffer was already in the process of adopting her daughter, Claudia. She and Kelley, a longtime TV creator and producer, had only been dating for about two months when she brought Claudia home.
"So we had this child with us right away, and most people don't have that. But I really got to see [David] in a situation that certainly would separate the boys from the men. Obviously, he really rose to the occasion," Pfeiffer told Good Housekeeping in 2007. "We both got to see each other as parents before we progressed in our relationship together and, in a strange way, it took the pressure off, as a couple."
She continued, "It was sort of perfectly timed. I mean, it's a real testament to the kind of person he is, but also to the fact that sometimes the traditional way of doing things isn't always the best way."
The couple tied the knot in November 1993, and Kelley officially adopted Claudia that same year. The following year, they welcomed their son, John Henry.
