A milk run, and a near perfect lottery ticket, that scored a Chester man $2 million

A Chester man presented a $2 million winning ticket to lottery officials, after a fortuitous milk run earlier this month.

According to the South Carolina Education Lottery, the man bought a winning ticket for the May 14 Powerball drawing. Lottery officials didn’t name the winner. In South Carolina, it isn’t required that the names of winners become public.

The winner matched all five numbers, but missed the Powerball number, on a trip to Food Lion on J.A. Cochran Bypass in Chester.

“I ran out of milk, and I needed it for my morning coffee,” the winner told lottery officials, according to a release.

A $1 purchase of the PowerPlay option doubled what would have been a $1 million win, to $2 million. According to the release, the may was on his way out of the store when he looked over at the customer service counter and decided to buy a ticket. The next day, he realized he’d won.

Odds of the $2 million win are 1 in nearly 11.7 million. The Food Lion in Chester got its own $20,000 commission for selling the winning ticket.

According to the lottery, there have been three million-dollar wins in South Carolina in the past three months. All three, with others in Dorchester and Spartanburg counties, have been $2 million wins.

York, Lancaster and Chester counties combine for several six-figure wins this year. Winners come from Rock Hill, Fort Mill, Lancaster County and Chester County. There haven’t been many seven-figure wins.

A Rock Hill player in October won $100,000 but declined the $1 power-up option on a Palmetto Cash 5 ticket that would have multiplied the win to $1 million.

The most recent $1 million win in the area came from a Clover couple who played the North Carolina Education Lottery. Gloria Walls and Gary Daniel won a $1 million top prize in the Jumbo Bucks scratch-off game in April 2021.

A month prior, a Chester County man became the first ever player to win $2 million on a scratch-off in South Carolina. In December 2020, a Rock Hill man won $1 million on a scratch-off ticket.
