Mizzou, KU basketball coaches inducted into Assistant Coaching Hall of Fame
Assistant coaches from the Missouri Tigers and Kansas Jayhawks were among those named to a hall of fame for assistants at a May 23 reception, according to releases from the respective area schools.
Missouri’s Charlton “C.Y.” Young and Kansas’ Norm Roberts were announced as part of the six-person class joining the “A STEP UP Assistant Coaches Hall of Fame.”

Per a Mizzou Athletics release, voting for the hall is “based on the candidates’ record of success, significant contributions to the game, as well as high character, integrity and respect among their colleagues.”
Young, Missouri’s associate head coach, was part of a squad that advanced into the second round of the NCAA Tournament in the 2022-23 season. Before joining the Tigers, Young coached under Leonard Hamilton at Florida State.
Among his other experience in a coaching career spanning more than 25 seasons, Young was head coach at Georgia Southern and an assistant coach at Georgia Tech, Chattanooga, Auburn, Northeastern and Jacksonville.
Roberts, on the other hand, was thrust into interim-coaching action for the Kansas Jayhawks this season, first in a four-game stretch as KU coach Bill Self and assistant Kurtis Townsend served a program-imposed suspension to begin the season. Then, while Self missed time due to a health scare, Roberts coached the team for the entirety of the 2022-23 postseason.
Kansas fell in the Big 12 Tournament final to Texas and lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to Arkansas with Roberts at the helm.
Roberts has previously been a head coach at St. John’s, and he served as an assistant under Self at Oral Roberts, Tulsa and Illinois, in addition to KU.
Other stops for Roberts included time as an assistant at Florida and head coach at Queen’s College.
