Moisson Montreal volunteers pack up 10K emergency food kits

More than 260 volunteers helped the Moisson Montreal food bank get ready for Christmas on Saturday.

Volunteers sorted through 72,000 kilograms of food donations and prepared emergency supply bags for families needing a little extra help this holiday season.

More than 10,000 emergency bags full of food and other supplies will be handed out by the food bank and its partners over the course of the next week or two.

Volunteers crammed into Moisson Montreal’s warehouse in St-Laurent on Saturday and listened to live music as they filled the yellow emergency bags with donations.

Local celebrities and politicians, including Mayor Denis Coderre, were on hand to pump up the crowd.

The event is becoming a holiday tradition in Montreal.

"People sign up almost a year in advance to come," said Marie-Claire Lynn, the communications coordinator for the food bank.

"I think it’s part of the holiday spirit, to be honest. I think people want to be able to give, and this is a great way of coming together… and doing something concrete."
