Is 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith' Coming Back for Season 2?
Amazon Prime Video's latest series, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, is bound to be a hit. The comedic spy-thriller was adapted from the 2005 classic starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. This time, Donald Glover and Maya Erskine play the Smiths.
Here’s the rundown. Glover and Erskine play two money-hungry spies. When an intelligence agency pairs them together, they’re given new identities: John and Jane Smith, a married couple living in New York City. Their mission is simple: follow instructions and don’t get caught. If you’ve already tuned into the series, you know how that works out.
John and Jane run into a few issues. Their missions are more complicated than expected; their boss, Hihi, is a bit shady, and the Smiths fall in love, fight, and nearly kill each other. Oh, and their neighbor won’t stay out of their business. I won’t spoil the finale, but it ends on quite the cliffhanger. Amazon hasn’t announced plans for a series renewal, but that hasn’t stopped the show’s co-creator, Francesca Sloane, from thinking about a second season.
“I think that there’s definitely a lot more story to tell here,” Sloane told Entertainment Weekly. Even so, she feels like the show could stand alone as a limited series if it isn't renewed. “I think that we definitely feel like this is a fully satisfied story if it were to just live on its own,” she explained. “But it definitely has more legs to keep going, that’s for sure.”
Until more news emerges, Sloane hopes viewers will be satisfied with the show. “The entire season is attempting to subvert the genre while still being really satisfying to people who love the movie, and I think that people who love the movie will be incredibly pleased with the way that our finale wraps up,” she said. “I feel like we’ve really earned the finale in terms of its gloriousness, but I also feel like people who have never even heard of the original IP of Mr. & Mrs. Smith will watch that and feel like it is a well-rounded, exciting, shoot-’em-up romance with a really interesting ending. And I think that ending is something that will have a lot of people talking.”
