MS star might be the nation’s best high school baseball player. Q&A with Konnor Griffin

Konnor Griffin has a chance to make history in the upcoming 2024 MLB draft.

The Jackson Prep standout is one of the top-ranked prospects in America and has an opportunity to become the highest-selected Mississippi native in draft history in July.

Griffin ranks No. 1 among prep players at Prospects Live and No. 2 on Perfect Game. The LSU commit is a two-way talent and physically gifted at 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds despite reclassifying from the 2025 class.

Though his fastball has reached the mid-90s and his abilities in the infield are polished, Griffin projects as a center fielder with plus-power potential.

If Griffin is taken within the first two picks on July 16, he’ll best 1969 third overall selection Ted Nicholson out of Oak Grove as the highest-drafted Mississippian.

The Sun Herald caught up with Griffin this season in Ocean Springs and broke down his love for the game and his goals for his senior season.

Sun Herald: When did you fall in love with baseball?

Konnor Griffin: I think I knew it was my sport when I was about 12. I started at T-ball, worked my way up, but I kind of fell in love with it around, you know, teenage years. So I’ll say that and that’s when everything took off.

SH: Do you have a player you model your game after?

KG: I would say Ronald Acuna Jr. He plays with a lot of energy, hits home runs, hits in the gap, likes to steal bases. So I would say a lot of my game is similar to his.

SH: Do you have a preference for hitting or pitching and why?

KG: I like to hit, I’m a hitter. I want to be an everyday player, you know. I don’t want to pitch and wait five days, I want to be on the field at all times.

SH: You set the school record for single season stolen bases in about two weeks, can you talk about that aspect of your game?

KG: Just something I’ve been really working on in the offseason, just being more explosive and being quick. It’s really paid off just trying to get on base as a leadoff (hitter). Get on base, steal bases and try to help my team win.

SH: How have you balanced recruiting from college coaches and professional scouts with your high school career?

KG: It’s definitely, definitely been really cool. I know a lot of people would want to be in my position. So just very thankful, give all the glory to God and just try to have fun with my boys one more time (in my) senior year.

SH: What are your goals for your senior year for yourself and your team?

KG: For myself just to go out knowing that I gave it my all and then, you know, win another state championship. We’ve won six in a row; trying to win seven.
