Myrtle Beach’s main post office reduces lobby hours for ‘safety concerns.’ What to know

The United States Postal Service’s main Myrtle Beach branch, located at 505 N. Kings Highway, has closed its lobby overnight because of “increased safety concerns.”

Previously, the lobby was open 24 hours daily, but the government agency posted a sign on the door announcing that the lobby will close overnight. The change began Jan. 10.

It appears that this is the only location affected by the change.

The new lobby hours are from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The lobby contains mailboxes and a self-service mail station.

“Recent incidents have necessitated a modification in the hours of operation. Signage is posted advising the public of this change. There will be no change in the retail hours of operation,” said USPS Strategic Communications Specialist Nikki Johnson in an email to The Sun News. “We apologize for any inconvenience customers may experience, but the safety of both customers and employees is our first priority.”

No other facilities have been impacted by this change, Johnson said. However, Johnson would not say what happened that warranted the changes.

“Protecting the sanctity of the mail and ensuring a safe experience for our customers is extremely important to the Postal Service,” Johnson said. The change was made “in an effort to maintain utmost security.”

Myrtle Beach Police Cpl. Chris Starling said the police have not received any complaints about the office.
