Naked bike riders to peel down Edmonton streets in June
Grab your helmet and sun screen. And leave your cycling shorts at home. The World Naked Bike Ride is set to streak through the streets of Edmonton on June 13.
Organizers say cyclists, skateboarders and rollerbladers are welcome to join the ride wearing nothing but a smile.
The event, they say, is less about exposed skin and more about positive exposure of cycling.
Julie Enman, the main organizer of the event, led about 30 riders through the streets of Whitehorse back in 2011.
We assume that was in summertime.
"If a small place like that can support it, and we can look at other ways to transport ourselves, why not Edmonton?" Enman said.
People who aren't comfortable with baring their birthday suits are welcome to ride in their undies, or in colourful costumes.
"There's nothing to say people have to come nude," Enman said. "It's more about people becoming comfortable in their own skin. If they feel comfortable getting a full body suntan, go for it."
The World Naked Bike Ride is an international movement. Rides are held in Toronto and Vancouver each year. This will be the first for Edmonton. If it's successful, there may be more chances for locals to ride in the raw.
Enman says the group is trying to raise awareness about bike safety.
"I've seen a lot of accidents in the paper lately regarding cyclists, and motorists aren't aware of them. Perhaps this is a little more eye-catching to see nude cyclists and pay attention to them."
