Hot Dog Fun Facts and Etiquette

The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council says the hot dog can be traced back as far as the 15th century to Germany and Austria, and to cities such as Frankfurt and Vienna. So that’s how the names frankfurter and Vienna sausages came to be!

A German immigrant in the 19th century is believed to have introduced hot dogs to the United States when he parked a cart in New York City’s Bowery district, and in 1871, the first Coney Island hot dog stand opened. According to the council, Americans spent more than $3 billion on hot dogs in the supermarket in 2018.

And as you celebrate National Hot Dog Day, the council wants to make sure you do it right.

Adding the Right Hot Dog Fixings

When it comes to adding toppings and condiments, you want to “dress the dog.” The stuff goes on top of the hot dog–not in between it and the bun. And there’s specific order to do it: mustard first, then chunky toppings — think onion and sauerkraut. Finally, top it all off with shredded cheese or with pepper and other spices. The council reports that once you become an adult, it’s no longer acceptable to use ketchup on a hot dog.

Finally, eat it the right way — with your hands and definitely not utensils — and don’t take more than five bites. Seven are OK for a footlong, though.

Enjoy!
