Upcoming NCIS spin-off NCIS: Origins has dropped a first teaser hinting at the early days of former protagonist Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

The short clip looks back on Gibbs' (Mark Harmon) exit from the show, with a voiceover teasing: "We know how his story ended. Now see how it all began."

The series will be set during Gibbs' time at Camp Pendleton, with younger versions of NCIS familiar faces set to make an appearance.

Austin Stowell will play a younger Gibbs, while Mariel Molino and Kyle Schmid will star as Lala Dominguez and Mike Franks respectively.

Diany Rodriguez portrays young Vera Strickland, the special agent who was originally played by Roma Maffia in 'Under the Radar', the third episode of the 11th season of the main show.

Tyla Abercrumbie will appear as Field Operation Support Officer Mary Jo, described as a "product of her time and the lifeblood of the Camp Pendleton office".

Last month, Longmire star Robert Taylor joined the cast as Jackson Gibbs, the "hard-nosed father of one-day NCIS team leader Jethro".

Those NCIS fans who have been missing Harmon since he bowed out in season 19 can rest easy as the actor will return on NCIS: Origins, serving as narrator for the prequel.

For an NCIS show that's on the way, another has seen its run cut short. Last week, CBS announced it is cancelling NCIS: Hawai'i after three seasons.

The show, led by Vanessa Lachey as Special Agent-in-Charge Jane Tennant, won't return for round number four after the current third season.

Commenting on the cancellation, Lachey said she felt "blindsided" by the decision.

Other cast members have expressed their frustration at CBS pulling the plug on the show, with Agent Kate Whistler actor Tori Anderson calling the axe "a huge loss for representation".

NCIS: Origins will be released this autumn. NCIS airs on CBS in the US. Seasons 1-20 are streaming on Disney+ in the UK.
