Netflix’s Egyptian Theatre Reopening Adds ‘Days of Heaven,’ ‘Don’t Look Now,’ and Zack Snyder’s 70mm ‘Rebel Moon’
Netflix is finally opening the doors to the newly restored Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood this week, and in a first-look preview ahead of its November 9 reopening, the streamer and its partner, the nonprofit American Cinematheque, highlighted some of the enhancements and a screening schedule through the end of 2023.
The Egyptian will reopen on Nov. 9 with a sold-out screening of David Fincher’s “The Killer,” followed by a Q&A with the director. Throughout November it will showcase a 70mm series that includes titles like Jacques Tati’s “Playtime,” Stanley Kubrick’s “Spartacus,” and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Boogie Nights.”

Announced today were December screenings for “Days of Heaven,” “L’amour Fou,” “Don’t Look Now,” “Imitation of Life,” “Lone Star,” “It’s a Wonderful Life,” and a new Netflix film for good measure: a 70mm screening of Zack Snyder’s upcoming “Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire.”
The screenings of Terrence Malick’s “Days of Heaven” and Jacques Rivette’s “L’amour Fou” are LA premieres of two new restorations. Nicolas Roeg’s “Don’t Look Now” is being shown thanks to the British Film Institute on a 35mm print for its 50th anniversary. Douglas Sirk’s “Imitation of Life” is a 35mm screening followed by a Q&A with actress Susan Kohner. Director John Sayles will be present for a Q&A on behalf of the 4K restoration of “Lone Star.” And “It’s a Wonderful Life” will screen in 35mm December 22-24.

Netflix hosted a press preview November 6 of the restored Egyptian, which includes Atmos sound. Architects worked to ensure sound could be implemented throughout the theater (originally intended as a silent movie hall) while preserving its iconic ceiling.
“To show in the form of a building where we’ve been, and where we are, and on the screen where we can go is quite a confluence of things,” American Cinematheque’s Rick Nicita said in a video (below). “If you look around and take it all in, new, old, what’s up there, you see what the past, present, future. I think it’s an ideal combination of cultural inspiration.”
Nicita added that “these are very trying times” for a nonprofit like the American Cinematheque, but its relationship with Netflix is a “symbiotic” one that will be enhanced with time.
