Netflix Show 'Delhi Crime' Wins International Emmy Award For Best Drama

Netflix series Delhi Crime (2019) – which was based on the investigation into the infamous Nirbhaya gangrape case of December 2012 – has won the International Emmy Award for Best Drama. Written and directed by Canadian filmmaker Richie Mehta, this seven-episode series has become the first Indian show to win this prestigious award. The award ceremony was held virtually due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.

The show starred veteran actor Shefali Shah in the role of DCP Vartika Chaturvedi, based on then-DCP (South Delhi) Chhaya Sharma IPS who conducted the investigation, as well as Rasika Duggal, Adil Hussain, and Rajesh Tailang, in main roles.

Delhi Crime’s win has got wide applause on Twitter. Actors Hrithik Roshan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Swara Bhasker, Aditi Rao Hydari, and designer Masaba Gupta were among the Bollywood celebrities who applauded the Emmy win.

Delhi Crime had also portrayed the intricate details of the horrible violence and trauma that the 22-year-old victim had undergone at the hands of five perpetrators. The incident happened when she was in a bus with a male friend, on the night of December 16, in New Delhi. The victim later died in a hospital in Singapore, and the out of the five perpetrators – who were arrested in less than a week after the incident – four were sentenced to death and one minor was let off charges after three years in a juvenile home. The four were executed earlier this year, after multiple delays.
