A pop singer has accused Nick Carter of sexually assaulting her – but the star is “shocked and saddened” to hear the claims.
Melissa Schuman, 33 – who is best known for being a part of teen band DREAM – has alleged the Backstreet Boys star forced himself on her against her will in 2002 when she was 18, after inviting her to his Santa Monica apartment for a “casual hangout”.
She claims Nick took her into a bathroom and performed oral sex on her, and when he asked her to do the same she declined and says he “was visually and clearly growing very angry and impatient with me”.
Nick has responded to the allegations, telling Rolling Stone he is “shocked” and “saddened” by them.
In a statement, he said: “I am shocked and saddened by Ms. Schuman’s accusations.
“Melissa never expressed to me while we were together or at any time since that anything we did was not consensual. We went on to record a song and perform together, and I was always respectful and supportive of Melissa both personally and professionally
“This is the first that I am hearing about these accusations, nearly two decades later.
“It is contrary to my nature and everything I hold dear to intentionally cause someone discomfort or harm.”
In a lengthy post on her blog, Melissa Explains It All, she wrote: “He was stronger and much bigger than me, and there was no way I would be able to open that door or have anyone help me.
“I felt scared and trapped. He was visually and clearly growing very angry and impatient with me. I couldn’t leave. So when he placed my hand on his penis my thought was the only way to get out was to get him to finish what he had started.
“That’s where I saw myself, my reflection, watching myself do something that I was sicken by. Watching myself be assaulted, forced to engage in an act against my will.”
Melissa also alleges Nick then took her to a bedroom and “climbed on top of me” and that despite claiming she told the singer she didn’t want to have sex, he was “relentless, refusing to take my no’s for an answer” and was “too heavy to get out from under him”.
She wrote: “I told him that I was a virgin and I didn’t want to have sex. I told him that I was saving myself for my future husband. I said it over and over again…
“It was done. The one thing I had held as a virtue had been ruined.
“I went limp, turned my head to my left and decided I would just go to sleep now. I wanted to believe it was some sort of nightmare I was dreaming up. (sic)”
Melissa says she was left “broken” by the alleged ordeal, and while she told her close family a long time ago, she feels now is the right time to speak publicly about what happened.
She wrote: “I was broken. I was tired. I was traumatized. I told my therapist. I told my family. I told my friends. I have a plethora of people who can attest that I eventually became open vocal about my experience, I’ve just never had the platform to come out publicly. (sic)”
Melissa claims she decided to come forward after Nick was accused of sexually assaulting a 20-year-old fan during a house party in 2006.
