Late night taxi hubs proposed for some Calgary LRT stations

Calgary's taxi committee has agreed to look at establishing late night taxi hubs at key LRT stations in each quadrant of the city.

The idea is to help C-Train riders connect with a taxi to get them the rest of the way home.

Right now, trains stop running around 1:30 a.m. and buses go out of service earlier than that.

Many cab drivers working overnight find most of their fares downtown, but driving a customer home in the suburbs usually means returning to the core empty.

Len Bellingham with Mayfair Taxi says the hub suggestion is interesting and could benefit both customers and drivers.

"If the business is there, I believe the cars will go there," he said. "But it has to be promoted to the drivers and to the public to let them know that this is [going on]. I think it will be accepted really well if they can work out all the bugs."

A report on the proposal is expected by the end of this year.
