Northern California jail clerk accused of smuggling drugs. ‘Angry and saddened,’ sheriff says

A woman working as a clerk for inmate visits at the Yuba County Jail was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of smuggling drugs into the detention facility.

The 33-year-old Marysville woman is suspected of facilitating the distribution of illegal drugs into the county jail, the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office announced in a news release. She was arrested Wednesday afternoon after investigators questioned her at the Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Wendell Anderson said there’s no place in his agency “for this type of behavior,” and those who violate our policies, the law and the public’s trust “will be rooted out and dealt with accordingly.”

“I am angry and saddened to learn of these events,” Anderson said in the news release. “This will have a major impact on our staff and community. In addition, the men and women who work in our jail and those in our care were put into harm’s way due to the actions of a few individuals.”

Her arrest stems from allegations that surfaced earlier this week and led to the investigation. Sheriff’s officials did not indicate what type of drugs were allegedly smuggled into the jail.

The Sheriff’s Office civilian employee has worked at the jail in Marysville since January 2022, and she was assigned as the visiting clerk, according to the Sheriff’s Office. She was booked at the jail on a charge of bringing narcotics into a correctional facility.

Sheriff’s officials said it’s unclear at this time what motivated her to facilitate drug smuggling into the jail and how many people may have been involved. The investigation continues, and sheriff’s officials said it’s possible there could be additional arrests.

“I am confident the investigators will find all responsible parties, and they will be held accountable for their actions,” the sheriff said in the news release. “We work hard to earn and keep the trust of our community and those we serve. Incidents like these often tarnish and damage that relationship.”
