Northern lights photos: See aurora borealis light up skies across several states
The aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights, were on full display across much of the United States Sunday night and into early Monday morning.
More than half of the northern U.S. was projected to see the dazzling display after the sun had a solar flare erupt on Friday that was directed toward Earth, according to the NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center. A geomagnetic storm is a severe disturbance in Earth's magnetic field and can cause widespread voltage problems.
The Northern Lights were forecast to be visible in as many as 30 states, depending on weather conditions like cloud coverage.
Photos and video taken in parts of North Dakota, Wyoming, Iowa, Kansas and Wisconsin captured the phenomenon.

National Weather Service offices shared photos of skies ablaze with shimmering green and purple hues.

A severe G4 geomagnetic storm brought #AuroraBorealis activity to lower than usual latitudes overnight resulting in rare sightings of the #NorthernLights from several U.S. states.
