BBC sitcom Motherland is getting an American remake.

The show about middle-class parents trying to navigate raising children and passive-aggressive peers will go under the working title Drop Off.

It will be led by Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and The Office US actress Ellie Kemper, who will also be the executive producer, ABC has confirmed (via Deadline).

Kemper will play working mum Julia, who is struggling to keep it all together. With the help of friends Calvin and Liz, she tries to find a way to balance work and children, with plenty of amusing hijinks along the way.

Deadpool's Karan Soni, who played taxi driver Dopinder, is set to star as Calvin – the US version of Kevin, played by Paul Ready.

Search Party's Michael Showalter is on board as director, with Grace and Frankie's Julieanne Smolinski as writer, alongside Motherland creators Sharon Horgan and Clelia Mountford. Bridesmaids director Paul Feig is producing.

After a successful pilot episode in 2016, the first series of Motherland aired in 2017. This has been followed by two further series and two Christmas specials – the most recent of which aired last December.

Could a fourth series happen? Last year, actress Tanya Moodie told Digital Spy and other press outlets she was as in the dark as any of us.

"I wish I could say," she said. "I know that all the goodwill in the world is there to make it come back, and then it's about getting everyone's ducks in a row.

"You've got to be free and so we all have our fingers crossed, and we're just really, really hoping."
