Oil and gas recognized

The 2024 Mayor’s Gala will have an oil and gas award added to the list of categories being recognized.

The Gala is hosted each year and recognizes past and present mayors of Drayton Valley. The Town also takes the time to celebrate different people and organizations that help make the community great. They do this by seeking nominations from residents in eight different categories: Business, community spirit, healthcare and emergency services, teachers/educators, youth empowerment, new community organization, excellence in athletics, and arts and music award.

Mayor Nancy Dodds says that each year, the Town receives suggestions from the community about different areas that can be celebrated.

In 2023, healthcare workers were added, along with new area organizations. This year, Dodds says people can nominate an oilfield company or an individual that has made significant contributions to the community, are involved in functions and events, and they're involved in the workplace supporting coworkers and employees.

“I think it’s just a way to celebrate the oil and gas industry,” says Dodds.

Last year, the Town celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Discovery Well and she says they felt that adding this category could continue to recognize the importance of the industry.

“I believe Drayton Valley is the heart of oil and gas, so I think this is a great way to celebrate it,” says Dodds.

The closing date for nominations this year is June 28. Anyone who is looking to nominate someone for an award can find the nomination forms online at the Town website, www.draytonvalley.ca, or they can pick up a paper copy from the Town office.
