One woman killed, another badly hurt in crash down Scenic Drive embankment at Coffee Road

One woman was killed and another suffered major injuries Saturday morning in a crash down the Dry Creek embankment in the area of Scenic Drive and Coffee Road in Modesto.

Shortly after 11 a.m., police, fire and emergency medical services responded to a rescue dispatch. They found a gray pickup over the embankment, crashed into a tree, with two people trapped, according to a Modesto Fire Department incident summary.

It was in an area “very difficult to access,” according to a Police Department news release.

Reaching the truck, responders found two adult women, whose ages had not been verified Sunday morning and whose names were withheld pending notification of family. Police Lt. Martha Delgado described the women as young.

The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver was conscious and alert, the police release says.

Fire crews stabilized the pickup, extricated the women — which took more than an hour — and used a low-angle rope system to carry them to the road.

The Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit is investigating. The news release says it does not appear that drugs or alcohol factored in the crash. Delgado had no information to release on what may have led to it.

Witnesses are encouraged to contact the Traffic Safety Unit at 209-572-9592.
