Online fundraiser created for Madison County woman injured in shooting, house fire

An online fundraiser has been created for a Madison County woman who was injured in a shooting and house fire last month by a man who died in the fire.

The link to the GoFundMe webpage says Nancye Erwin was shot at her home by a man who she was trying to help with his health recovery. She was shot in the face and has since undergone two surgeries to try and put her jaw back together, the post states.

After the shooting, the man, who was not named, set the house on fire, according to Larisa Erwin, who is Nancye Erwin’s sister-in-law and is organizing the GoFundMe webpage. Larisa Erwin said her sister-in-law was able to escape from the burning home and call for help. It is believed the man died by suicide.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office previously said it received a report of shots fired at a residence on Jeremiah Drive on June 29. When deputies arrived they located Nancye Erwin with non-life threatening gunshot wounds in a vehicle.

Flames from the home prevented deputies from entering the home to attempt to locate the other occupant, the Sheriff’s Office previously said. Seven fire departments responded to the scene to extinguish the fire including the Madison County Fire Department, which located the man’s body inside.

Nancye Erwin continues to undergo medical treatment, according to her sister-in-law. She still has shrapnel in her neck/spine and missing teeth.

Additionally, Nancye Erwin and her son lost everything in the fire, including three cats, according to Larisa Erwin. The GoFundMe page was created to help Nancye Erwin while she recovers and all money donated will go toward medical expenses, food, clothes and housing.

“While we are incredibly grateful that she survived this horror, she and her son are now left without a home,” Larisa Erwin said on the GoFundMe page.

As of Wednesday morning the webpage had raised just under $6,000. The goal for the fundraiser is $18,000.
