Online licence renewal service launched, photo deadline extended

The Newfoundland and Labrador government announced Wednesday a new online service option for people looking to renew a driver's licence.

Service NL is also extending the validity of licence photos from five years to 10 years for drivers over 19.

That will mean drivers will need to visit their regional offices to get a new licence photo taken once every decade.

Minister Eddie Joyce said in a statement the goal is to make licence renewal more convenient for all drivers.

"With this new online service and 10 year photos, people can avoid line-ups, save time, and even save a trip to another community if the nearest motor registration office is located outside their area," said Joyce.

The extended photo validity is intended to reduce the need for people to visit their regional Motor Vehicle Registration offices, the statement read.

The online renewal is a five-step process, including making an account and updating personal information, renewing the licence, paying and being sent a receipt.

Licence renewal is mandatory every five years.
