(Ont-Legis-Keffiyeh)

A motion from the N-D-P to allow keffiyehs to be worn in the Ontario legislature has failed as it did not receive unanimous consent after at least one member voted against it.

Premier Doug Ford and the opposition leaders have all called for Speaker Ted Arnott to reverse his decision to not allow the scarf in the legislature.

A keffiyeh is a checkered scarf typically worn in Arab cultures that has come to symbolize solidarity with Palestinians.

Arnott says the legislature has long tried to restrict wearing any clothing or item attempting to make an overtly political statement and he believes that at this moment in time the keffiyeh meets that definition. (The Canadian Press)

(Ont-Zameer-Trial)

The judge presiding over the trial of a man accused of fatally running over a Toronto police officer is delivering her instructions to the jury.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Anne Molloy began explaining the relevant legal principles to jurors in the trial of Umar Zameer yesterday and is continuing today.

Zameer has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the death of Det. Const. Jeffrey Northrup, who died after he was hit by a vehicle in an underground parking garage at Toronto City Hall.

The defence has argued Zameer did not intend to kill anyone and behaved reasonably in the face of what he thought was an imminent threat to his family as police in plain clothes -- who he thought were robbers -- rushed to his car and began banging on it.

Prosecutors say Zameer made deliberate choices to drive dangerously while there were people nearby, killing the officer. (The Canadian Press)
