From overgrown to basketball ready, Horry firefighters restore unused Atlantic Beach court

Crews from Horry County Fire Rescue team were able to repair a community basketball court that was once used by the community years ago.

Overgrown with vines, damaged and unusable, the basketball court sat locked up for around 20 years. It used to be a gathering place for the community where kids could play ball and hold midnight games.

Now residents will soon be able to utilize the court once again.

Horry County Fire Rescue Station 7 Battalion Chief Ed Begovich said they often try to find positive projects to work on while performing regular duties.

“It’s something we can help out with the community,” Begovich said. “We try to become a part of the communities we serve by doing that, so they see us on the good days, and not just the bad days that we need to.”

After checking with the town office and police chief, crews from Station 7 spent the day painting the backboards, hoops and new lines. They also installed new nets and repaired the fencing.

The crew remained call-responsive during the cleanup.

The Atlantic Beach mayor and police chief have created a plan for fixing the lighting and starting a new basketball program, according to Horry County Fire Rescue.

A pickup game with community members, Station 7 personnel and the Atlantic Beach Police Department is already in the works.

A call to Atlantic Beach Police Chief Quentin Robinson was not immediately returned Monday.

The police chief stated the park hours will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to Horry County Fire Rescue Lt. Robert Clarke.

“We just want to invite the community to come out there and have a great time playing ball,” he said.
