P.E.I. Canada Day activities at a glance

Happy Birthday Canada!

From east to west on P.E.I. — also known as Canada's birthplace — here's a sampling of some activities Islanders can enjoy on Canada's 149th birthday.

Souris slip-and-slide

The town of Souris will celebrate Canada Day from noon to 4 p.m. at CN Park.

It kicks off with speeches, cake and awards for citizen and volunteer of the year at noon, followed by entertainment from Up & Coming Stars of the East and The Ross Family with guest Peggy Clinton.

There will be inflatable bouncy rides, a 32-foot obstacle course and a 28-foot slip-and-slide.

There's also a barbecue at the Legion starting at 6 p.m. with music by The Perrys and an invitation to watch the fireworks from the Legion's deck. Admission is by donation.

Head down to the beach for music tentatively scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m., followed by fireworks at 10 p.m. More info here.

Music in Montague

There will be music from local musicians Niall MacKay, Cody Taylor, Frank Whitty and Chris Johnston on the waterfront in Montague from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

There will also be free hot dogs and Canada cake. More info here.

A weekend-long talent contest starts at 7 p.m. at the Montague Curling Club. The best five acts make it to round two Saturday night, then the final three will compete Sunday. Top prize is $300 and the contest is open to all ages.

Sun in Stratford

Stratfordites can enjoy Canada Day starting bright and early with a fundraising pancake breakfast 7:30 a.m. at Statford Town Centre that includes kids' activities and an international tea house. It's $8 for adults, $5 for children or $20 per family.

Festivities at Tea Hill Park start at 1:30 p.m. Richie Bulger and the Wannabeez and youth band Generator will perform, there will be multicultural food and displays all afternoon as well as bouncy rides, face painting and balloon twisting.

Speeches and community awards are at 2:30 p.m. followed by hot dogs, cake, ice cream and strawberries — all free. More info here.

Charlottetown: Fun and fireworks

Charlottetown's Canada Day activities are all based in Victoria Park. The party gets underway at 11:30 a.m. with a 21-gun salute and birthday cake, followed by a 10-hour free concert featuring different local musicians every hour including Lady Soul and Love Junkies.

There's also face painting and bouncy rides and a petting zoo from 1 to 5 p.m. and food will be available from vendors all day.

The evening will be topped off, as always, with a massive fireworks display at 10 p.m. from the shores of Victoria Park. B.Y.O.B.: bring your own blanket! More info here.

Kick it in Kensington

Kensington's celebrations at the Rail Yard kick off — literally —with the Lady Slipper Step Dancers at 11 a.m. At noon, there's a flag raising, a colour party from the Legion, speeches from the local MP, senator and MLA and community awards, followed by cake and music with Nathan Condon and Alan and Taylor Sonier.

There's a free barbecue, ice cream, balloons and face painting, and a petting zoo from 11 to noon.

It's going to be a hot one — bring a swimsuit and towel, because the town's public pool opens at noon, and it's free. More info here.

On the shore in Summerside

Summerside's party is happening at Green's Shore in the west end of the city from noon until 10 p.m.

The Music Man starts at noon, then tunes from Misty Water in the afternoon, Kenny Pearl in the early evening and the Saul Good Band from 7 to 10 p.m.

There will be inflatable bouncy rides for all ages — including adults! Face painting and balloons, with a civic ceremony at 8 p.m.

There will be fireworks at dusk, about 10 p.m. Folks are encouraged to park at nearby Credit Union Place. More info here.

O Canada in O'Leary

Fun at Centennial Park in O'Leary 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Entertainment from Tyler Gallant, with birthday cake and a free barbecue, as well as children's games and community awards.

Talent in Tignish

What better way to celebrate Canada than with a little shopping? Drop by Tignish's first-ever Farmer's Market at the local arena Friday, and a community-wide yard sale.

Official festivities from 1 p.m. to midnight at the Heritage/Bluegrass Grounds include a character show, music, a vintage car show, a youth talent show at 6 p.m., a movie screening of Zootopia at 7 p.m., and entertainment by Ben Gallant, Wade Carragher and Alyssa Harper until midnight — they'll take a break for fireworks at 10 p.m. More info on the Tignish Irish Moss Festival Facebook page here.
