P.E.I. minimum wage going up Wednesday

Workers in Prince Edward Island making minimum wage are about to get another raise.

On October 1, the minimum wage will go up to $10.35 an hour. This will be the second increase this year. On June 1, the wage increased from $10 an hour to $10.20.

The raises were announced in the spring by labour minister Janice Sherry.

In New Brunswick, the minimum wage is $10 an hour. In Nova Scotia, it's $9.90 for inexperienced workers, and $10.40 for experienced ones. In Newfoundland and Labrador, the rate will be $10.25 this October.

The last increase to the minimum wage on P.E.I. was two years ago.

The Greater Charlottetown Area Chamber of Commerce is critical of the move, saying business owners weren't given enough notice about the increases. It suggests announcing increases at a fixed date each year.

Meanwhile, P.E.I.'s Employment Standards Board will soon be conducting another annual review of the province's minimum wage.

It's accepting written submissions until October 22nd.
