Parapan Am Games: Canada names Zak Madell closing ceremony flag-bearer

Wheelchair rugby star Zak Madell was selected as Canada's flag-bearer for Saturday night's closing ceremony of the 2015 Parapan Am Games.

"I am incredibly proud to be the flag bearer and to lead Team Canada out in the closing ceremonies," said Madell. "Team Canada has achieved amazing results and I am very proud to be part of the Toronto 2015 Games."

The 21-year-old Madell led Canada's wheelchair rugby team to the gold medal at the Games scoring 34 points in a 57-54 victory over the U.S.. His 109 points were second overall in the tournament.

The win secures Canada a spot at the Paralympics next summer in Rio.

"Zak Madell embodies what it is to be a flag-bearer. He is a phenomenal athlete and well respected leader," said Elisabeth Walker-Young, Chef de Mission for Team Canada. "Everyone in the stands witnessed his impact on game changing plays. He's passionate about the Paralympic movement and dedicated to making himself and his teammates better. We're are excited to see him compete as part of Team Canada in Rio."

Canada finished second in the medal standings with 168, behind only Brazil (257).
