Parts of Bengaluru Flooded After Heavy Rains, Vehicles Swept Away

Parts of Bengaluru received heavy rain on Friday, 23, October, causing some areas in the Karnataka capital to flood, with vehicles getting submerged and even swept away.

Areas such as Hosakerehalli, Gurudatta Layout, Dattatreya Nagar and Pramod Layout in Rajarajeshwari Nagar were some of the worst-affected, The News Minute reported.

According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), Kengeri and Rajarajeshwari Nagar received over 100 mm of rainfall while at least 13 other locations in the city received over 50 mm rainfall, it was further reported.

CM Yediyurappa Announces Rs 25,000 Compensation

State minister R Ashok and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner Manjunath Prasad visited the rain-affected areas on Saturday. “Rescue operations are underway. Our officers are estimating the loss caused due to heavy rainfall yesterday,” said R Ashok, ANI reported.

"“Waterlogging occurred in Hosakerehalli area after heavy rainfall yesterday because of poor drainage system here. Rs 25,000 will be given as compensation to each house that has got damaged due to rainfall.”" - Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa, as quoted by ANI

More rainfall is predicted in the state capital over the weekend. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted there would be "light to moderate spells of rain with intermittent heavy spells of rainfall" in and around the city till 28 October.

The heavy rains in Bengaluru came amid continuous rains in the coastal districts of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada in the state. Four districts in northern Karnataka were left reeling under floods and flood-like conditions after a heavy spell of rainfall.
