Patrick Mahomes rides a lap at Grand Prix, Chiefs fans freak out: ‘Don’t do that again’

Patrick Mahomes didn’t just attend the British Grand Prix on Sunday. He got to enjoy a perk of being a co-owner of BWT Alpine F1, one of the teams competing.

The team strapped Mahomes into a car and drove him around the track at speeds that made the three-time Super Bowl winner declare to the driver: “That is freakin’ insane man!”

Mahomes posted a video of the ride to his Instagram account, where Kansas City Chiefs fans made it clear they thought the moment was insane, too.

“I am having a heart attack,” one fan wrote, echoing many.

“Be careful!!! We want you in one piece!!”

“Don’t do that again. … you are a national treasure!!”

“Excuse me, shouldn’t you be wrapped in bubble wrap??”

“Be Safe!!! Precious Cargo to the Chiefs & Kansas City.”

“Don’t do that; we need you at Arrowhead safe and sound!”

“Hold on to your cross Pat!!!!!”

“I want to see Andy (Reid’s) reaction to this lol.”

As Mahomes walked up to the car he said, “We’re takin’ a hot lap, so I’m gonna hop in a car, take a time or two around the track and see what’s up.” He strapped on a racing helmet and took off, riding in the passenger seat.

In a hot lap, aka a “flying lap,” drivers push to set a fast time in qualifying or during practice. The team didn’t say how fast they buzzed Mahomes around the track.

“Ooooooh,” he laughed as the car rounded corners, pushing him closer to the driver.

He had a good time.

“Dude, that was insane. Insane,” he said after the ride. “I see why they do that. That’s addicting right there.”

The rest of the video shows him watching the race — not a good day for the team that he and Chiefs teammate Travis Kelce invested in last year — then flying away from his “exciting day” in a helicopter.

“Patrick out here living the life,” one fan wrote.

Good to be king?

(Some fans commented that the helicopter ride made them nervous, too.)

Mahomes squeezed the trip to the Grand Prix into a packed European vacation he’s been enjoying with his family since last month. He’s due at training camp next week, where the Chiefs will begin their own race to win a third consecutive Super Bowl.

As one fan on the racing video wrote: “Your QB wishes he was this cool.”
