Pedestrian dies after being struck by semi with two trailers, car on Kansas City highway

A pedestrian died after being struck by at least two vehicles, one of which was a semi pulling two trailers, early Thursday on Interstate 435 in south Kansas City, a police spokeswoman said.

The fatal crash occurred about 1 a.m. near Grandview Road where I-435 enters the Three Trails Crossings interchange, which was formerly known as the Grandview Triangle.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the semi truck was headed east on I-435 in the far left lane just before the Grandview Road overpass. The pedestrian, who was by a red Chevrolet Malibu on the left shoulder, stepped out in front of the semi, said Officer Alayna Gonzalez with the Kansas City Police Department.

The semi truck struck the pedestrian. A second vehicle, a red Ford Escape, also struck the pedestrian who was lying on the road. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, she said.

The drivers of both vehicles stopped. Neither of them was injured.

The pedestrian’s death is Kansas City’s 70th traffic fatality of the year, the same number of fatalities the city had at this time last year, Gonzalez said.
