Pedestrian hit and killed on Highway 101 in Atascadero, CHP says

A 25-year-old man is dead after he was hit by a pickup truck on Highway 101 in Atascadero early Tuesday morning, the California Highway Patrol confirmed to The Tribune.

CHP Officer Patrick Seebart said a 32-year-old man was driving a 2022 Toyota Tacoma northbound on Highway 101 north of Santa Rosa Road around 2:19 a.m.

That’s when a 25-year-old man, who had been standing in the median, attempted to run across the highway.

The man stepped directly in front of the truck, Seebart said, and the driver did not have time to react or hit the brakes.

The driver called 911, Seebart said, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Drugs and alcohol are not a factor on the part of the driver, Seebart said, and the autopsy of the 25-year-old will test for any intoxication.

Seebart said the agency is investigating whether the incident was intentional or accidental.

The identity of the pedestrian will not be released until the next-of-kin is notified.
