Pedestrian hit, killed by SUV in Modesto. It’s the third fatal Stanislaus collision of week
A 64-year-old Modesto man, Daniel Trevarthen, was killed in a pedestrian vs. vehicle collision on the 300 block of Santa Cruz Avenue on Thursday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The Merced Communication Center received the call at about 6 a.m. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found a white Chevrolet SUV and Trevarthen, unresponsive, lying in the southbound lane of Santa Cruz near its intersection with Mono Drive, according to a CHP statement.
Lifesaving measures were conducted but Trevarthen died at the scene.
Initial findings of the CHP investigation indicate the Chevrolet was southbound on Santa Cruz , approaching Mono “at an unknown speed.” In a wheelchair, Trevarthen entered the intersection where there was no marked crosswalk. “The Chevrolet was unable to avoid the crash,” according to the CHP’s statement.
It has not been determined whether alcohol or drugs factored in the collision, the CHP reported.
Trevarthen is the third pedestrian killed this month, and the seventh in the past month that the Modesto Bee has reported on.
Tuesday, a bicyclist identified as 46-year-old Ryan Ontiveroz of Modesto was killed in a hit-and-run on the 3700 block of McHenry Boulevard. Investigators are asking for the public’s help in finding a white or light-colored 2010 to 2013 model Kia Soul last seen traveling southbound on McHenry Avenue and believed to be involved in the collision.
Monday, Turlock resident Shane Hurst, 33, was killed on the 3100 block of West Christoffersen Parkway in Turlock. Police are looking for a 2003 to 2009 model, light-colored Hummer H2 described by witnesses as the vehicle involved in the collision. It was last seen going east on West Christoffersen Parkway immediately after the collision.
Daniel Gallegos, a 51-year-old man believed to be homeless, died after being struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Yosemite Boulevard/Highway 132 and Hazeldean Road near Modesto Reservoir on Oct. 31. The Modesto Bee previously reported a different age and residence for Gallegos, which was later corrected by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office.
On Oct. 27, Rosanna Petrushkin became the 15th person to die in a Modesto traffic collision this year after she was struck at the intersection of Park Avenue and Needham Street.
Michael Tucker, 44, was killed by a tractor-trailer rig on the 1400 block of East Hatch Road, several hundred feet east of Highway 99 on Oct. 19.
A 59-year-old man was killed on Oct. 10 while crossing Standiford Avenue in North Modesto. Officers later arrested 21-year-old Isabelle Fernandez on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence.
Modesto consistently has ranked among the worst for traffic crashes among its peer cities across the state in recent years, The Bee previously reported.
