Man in his 50s dead after being struck by bus in Whitby

Ajax woman accused of trying to drown 3-year-old son near waterfront park

A man in his 50s is dead after he was struck by a transit bus in Whitby early Thursday morning.

Police were called around 6:30 a.m. for reports that a male pedestrian was hit by a bus and then bounced off another car on Brock Street south at the 401, Dave Selby, spokesperson for Durham Regional Police Service, told CBC Toronto.

A police news release later said the man had been in the middle of the road when he was first struck by the bus, which knocked him into the southbound lanes of Brock Street, where he was struck by another car.

The pedestrian was rushed to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre with life-threatening injuries, Selby said.

Shortly after 9 a.m., police said the man died in hospital.

Brock Street is expected to remain closed in both directions at the 401 overpass until late morning, police said. This means there is no access to the westbound 401 on-ramp from southbound Brock Street. Motorists can access the eastbound on-ramp.

Drivers exiting the eastbound 401 can only go south on Brock Street, police said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Durham police traffic services unit at 888-579-1520, ext. 5226 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
