Person dies after being hit by Amtrak train in Durham. Second railroad death in days.

A person was killed when they crossed railroad tracks in Durham and was hit by an Amtrak train Saturday afternoon.

Durham police said the fatality happened around 1:09 p.m. near 3573 Hillsborough Road at the intersection of Hillsborough and Cole Mill roads. Police confirmed there was a fatality at the scene.

According to Amtrak, Train 72 was stopped west of Durham due to a trespasser coming in contact with the equipment. A lengthy delay is expected.

Amtrak said updates would follow as more information becomes available.

This is the second fatal Amtrak collision in Durham in recent days.

One person was killed when a car crossing the railroad tracks in East Durham was hit by an Amtrak train on Thursday evening, The News & Observer previously reported.
