PHOTOS: Military dog who lost leg in Afghanistan awarded for bravery

Lucca, a German shepherd who lost her leg during a mission in Afghanistan, has been given the highest award any animal can receive while serving in military conflict.

In 2012, Lucca was sniffing for roadside bombs in Afghanistan when a device detonated causing the 12-year-old dog to lose her front left leg.

The brave canine has protected the lives of thousands of troops during the six years she served with the U.S. military, completing 400 separate missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Lucca was honoured with the PDSA Dickin Medal by the UK’s leading veterinary charity at a ceremony in London. The honour is equivalent to receiving the Victoria Cross.
