Pickup truck driver picks up list of charges

A 39-year-old British Columbia man was charged with impaired driving and several other offences Monday night after provincial police intercepted a speeding pickup truck near Thunder Bay. Police said the truck, which investigators say was bearing stolen licence plates, was clocked at nearly 30 km/h over the limit when it was spotted on Highway 102 near the Alppila Road intersection around 9 p.m. The posted limit on the route is 90 km/h. In addition to the impaired driving offence, Charles Tiermer was charged with dangerous driving, driving while prohibited, driving with an open container of liquor, failing to comply with a prohibition order, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and driving without insurance, a provincial news release said. Tiermer was to appear in Thunder Bay on Tuesday for a bail hearing, the release said. None of the charges have been proven in court. Registrations welcomed for summertime marathons Registration has opened for the annual Kakabeka Falls marathon and half-marathon running events to be held at the end of August. The event, now in its seventh year, has previously raised $4,000-$5,000 for Kakabeka Falls Legion Branch 225. In 2023, the event attracted 40 runners for the full marathon, and about 150 for the half-marathon, which is considered the more scenic of the two routes. All the events are to take place on Aug. 18. Eight-kilometre categories are also available. More information is available on the event's website at runkbfalls.com.
