Dubai has been brought to a standstill overnight after the United Arab Emirates was hit by over 14cm of rain in a day – as much as the country expects in a year-and-a-half.
Schools and workplaces across the country have been closed and dramatic pictures show cars and buses completely submerged.
The flooding has brought flights to a sudden halt, with thousands of passengers stranded as the heavy rainfall prevented planes from taking off.
At least 20 people have been killed, 19 in Oman to the north of the UAE. Authorities warn more severe weather is to come, as much of both countries remain underwater.
Here are some key pictures of the events:

A group of several dozen Baltimore hospitality workers and supporters picketed outside the Hyatt Regency hotel on Light St. during rush hour Thursday, pushing for higher pay for hundreds of local employees at that hotel and at the nearby Hilton Baltimore. "People cannot live on those wages. It's completely unrealistic," said Jeffrey Barner, a bellman at the Hilton.
For Hyatt, a marketing tie-up with Under Canvas represents a strategic expansion into the booming outdoor resort sector, catering to travelers seeking posh stays in natural surroundings.

Arson attacks on multiple French train lines have thrown people's trips to the Paris Olympics into doubt. France's rail operator SNCF confirmed that "several simultaneous malicious acts" overnight mean that trains to Paris from Bordeaux, Lille, and Strasbourg will likely be severely disrupted for the whole weekend. Eurostar is also having to redivert its services, urging people not to travel - and warning many journeys have been cancelled - or will take an extra hour-and-a-half.
American Airlines on Thursday cut its annual profit forecast, citing its previous sales and distribution strategy that drove away corporate travelers and hit its revenue. The Texas-based airline also highlighted an excess capacity in the domestic market that has undermined the industry's pricing power. Under the previous strategy, American sought to rework its contracts with corporate travel agencies and customers, cutting perks and discounts.
