Body found in Folsom Lake — Placer deputies say it may be one of two missing swimmers
The Placer County Sheriff’s Office was investigating after a body was found Friday morning in Folsom Lake.
The body of the person was spotted near Rattlesnake Bar, said Angela Musallam, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office. She said she likely won’t have information about the person’s identity or the cause of death until Monday.
She said it’s possible the person found Friday in the lake was one of the swimmers that went missing over the past few weeks, but that has not been confirmed and the person’s death remained under investigation.
Placer County officials say at least two people are missing and presumed drowned in separate incidents in the American River.
About 7:45 p.m. on April 29, a group of friends from Sacramento and Placer counties called 911 to report that one person in their group had been swept away in the river. In the afternoon of May 14, a Bay Area man recreating by Yankee Jims Bridge near Foresthill jumped into the North Fork of the American River before being swept away by water.
Local officials are warning everyone that it is still too cold to swim in Northern California rivers. The temperatures are in the 90s in Sacramento, but the record Sierra snowpack is melting, creating dangerously fast and cold currents for anyone else looking to cool off.
Sacramento County parks officials closed the Howe Avenue access point to the American River due to a high river level and fast flow. Popular Rancho Cordova-based American River Raft Rentals has temporarily stopped its rental operations due to high water level and flow, according to its website.
Officials in Placer County called “Be River Wise” public safety campaign this year, warning everyone that the rivers are especially dangerous this year.
Katrina Hand, a National Weather Service meteorologist, has said cold water temperatures can create challenging conditions, even for an experienced swimmer. Taking a plunge into cold water can be a shock to the body, and in some cases can become deadly.
