As a reminder, Essential is the basic Sony subscription tier that allows gamers to play online and gives you a handful of games every month that can be added to your account permanently, and played as long as there's an active subscription.
Suitably for Halloween month, the lead game is The Callisto Protocol (PS5/PS4), a big-name release from last year from the co-creator of Dead Space that aimed to recapture the magic of that original release.
The game received mixed reviews overall, with Digital Spy's own review stating: "It's a shame that, despite looking great and having a good concept at its core, some poorly-executed ideas lead to a frustrating experience overall.
"For a new studio to produce a brand new IP is obviously a mammoth task and commendable, so here’s hoping the team get another chance to get a grip on this universe and tighten up the experience."
There's also Weird West (PS5/PS4), an isometric gunner mixing all the rootin' tootin' cowboy shootin' with supernatural creatures. Reviews have praised this for a surprisingly in-depth story, and plenty of solid RPG mechanics that give it tons of replayability and customisation.
It's not all monster-themed, however. The final game is Farming Simulator 22 (PS5/PS4). You know what you're getting with these sort of games, all the fun of working some sort of job without the downsides of it (but also sadly you don't get paid actual money).
These games will be available to claim for a few weeks from Tuesday, October 3. You've got until then to claim September's games: Saints Row, Black Desert – Traveler Edition and Generation Zero.
