Police release name of young man killed in shooting near downtown Durham

Police have identified a young man fatally shot near downtown Durham on Sunday as 19-year-old Ashir Harrington.

Officers responded to “a report of a gunshot wound” in the parking lot at West Morgan and Watts streets just after 2 a.m., and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound, the Durham Police Department said in a news release.

Harrington was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police released no other information.

As of April 20, the latest statistics available, at least 56 people had been shot in Durham this year. Eight of those people died.

Eleven people 18 to 20 years old — Harrington’s age — had been shot, police statistics show.

This year’s shootings are down from last year, when 58 people had been shot, 16 of them fatally,
