Police Officer Stops Man Jumping From 6th Floor of Connecticut Retirement Home

A police officer in Connecticut staged a dramatic rescue on April 21 when an elderly male resident of a retirement home in Hamden attempted to jump from a sixth-floor terrace.

The Hamden Police Department said Officer Justin Martin had responded to a report of a “combative resident” at the Whitney Center home on the afternoon of April 21. He met with staff members and the resident, but the resident ran away, police said. The video shows the officer chasing after the resident, finding him trying to escape through a sixth-floor doorway into a terrace. The resident is seen diving head first over a railing, but the police officer grabs the man, pulling him back to safety.

Police said the resident “continually interfered with Officer Martin’s efforts by ‘pulling away’ and ‘kicking his feet’ during the rescue,” and was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for evaluation. Credit: Hamden Police Department via Storyful
