Victim in overnight fatal Rexdale shooting ID'd as Soumik Asgar, 20

Seniors in northwest Toronto being robbed of jewelry in 'distraction thefts': police

A 20-year-old Toronto man has been identified as the victim in a fatal shooting Rexdale early Sunday morning.

Soumik Asgar is the city's 21st homicide victim of the year, Toronto police say.

Officers were called to Blue Haven Crescent, near the intersection of Finch and Islington avenues, around 2:30 a.m. Sunday by neighbours who reported hearing gunshots nearby.

Emergency personnel arrived at the scene to find a badly injured man in the driver's seat. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbours also told police they heard gunshots and that a white SUV was seen in the area.

Police said earlier Sunday that they were looking to identify a passenger in the SUV's front seat who they said left the scene before constables arrived, but could not confirm any direct link to the incident.

Around 5:30 p.m., police said they were no longer looking for that passenger.
