Popular Edmonton Chinese restaurant temporarily closed for unsanitary conditions

A popular Chinese restaurant in Edmonton has been ordered to close after health inspectors found evidence of mice, cockroaches and unsafe food handling within the restaurant.

Alberta Health Services issued a closure notice to Garden Bakery & Restaurant at 10019 106th Avenue earlier this week.

An inspection report from an executive officer from AHS found the restaurant was in a condition dangerous to public health.

The inspection found a "present and active" cockroach infestation, and evidence of fruit flies, house flies and mice. An "accumulation of grime, grease, soot and food debris" was found on counters, walls, floors, sinks and food preparation areas, and grease buildup was noted around electrical and gas pipes.

Other infractions noted include: cooked rice being kept at an unsafe temperature, a dishwasher was not properly sanitizing dishes, mildew growth in the walk-in cooler, dirty and moldy food storage containers were in use, and leaking plumbing.

The restaurant has been ordered to close immediately and the owner must complete a list of repairs and cleaning, improve food handling and control pests before reopening.

Calls from CBC News to Garden Bakery for comment were not immediately returned.

The restaurant has a 4.4-star rating on Facebook. Its website describes the eatery as a Hong Kong-style bakery with European pastries and custom cakes. It says it has more than 250 varieties of food items and that the restaurant also delivers.

The restaurant also has a second location in West Edmonton Mall.
