Princess Beatrice Shares a Health Update on Her Mother, Sarah Ferguson

There's been no shortage of health concerns in the royal family this year, but according to a new statement by Princess Beatrice, there's one less to worry about. Earlier this week, the princess appeared on U.K. talk show This Morning to promote The Outward Bound Trust, and along the way shared a promising health update on her mother, Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York.

"She's doing really well. She's had a bumpy health scare last year but all clear now," Beatrice said. "At 64, she's thriving; she's been through so much, but I think really now she's coming into her own."

This January, a spokesperson for the duchess shared the news that Ferguson had been diagnosed with malignant melanoma skin cancer. The condition was discovered during her treatment for breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with during the summer of 2023.

"We're just reminded when any parent or individual has a health scenario, just really get the checks that you need to get as early as you possibly can," Beatrice told This Morning. "Both my sister [Princess Eugenie] and I are so proud of her for taking those steps to get those checks and it really modeled our health considerations on that."

This marks the latest bit of good news from the royal family, following King Charles's return to public-facing duties late last month. While the monarch is still operating on a pared-back schedule as he continues his own treatment for an unspecified from of cancer, he paid an official visit to the University College Hospital’s Macmillan Cancer Centre on April 30 to raise awareness of the importance of early diagnosis. On the same day, he was announced as Patron of Cancer Research UK—a patronage previously held by his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Though Charles is back in the public eye, it's not clear when his daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton, could be returning to duties. Kate announced in March that she had also been diagnosed with cancer, following a planned abdominal surgery in January. Like Charles, the specific form of cancer she is suffering from was not shared, but the Princess of Wales is receiving "a course of preventative chemotherapy," per the Palace.
